Online Moderation for a “Healthier” Social Media

The internet or social media is supposed to be for our own advantages. It should help us correspond to our workmates during crises, conduct research while staying at home and learn news without spending too much money.

However, no good things come without its “bad side”. In as much as we want the internet to be a secure means to easier living, some of us misbehave leading to unwanted incidents.

Online moderation covers everything that needs to be filtered or supervised online. Business websites need online moderation so unrelated pictures are published. Social networking sites depend on online moderation so no pornographic items are displayed to minors. Forums and discussion board owners hire online moderators to ensure that participating members do not discriminate each other. Educational sites require online moderators to be alert so no pedophile takes advantage of our innocent children.

Taking online moderation as if it were an “economics” product, we can say that it is a “need” and not just a mere “want”. It is for our protection from abusers whose goal in life is to feed their selfishness and garbage gigs. Online moderation is the answer to minimize our chances of interacting with hackers, criminals and reckless internet users.

Sites that do not believe in the capabilities of online moderation end up with poor traffics. No one would want to visit a website that allows the posting of biased statements, fake news reports and abusive data. As elders, we do not permit our younger folks to be part of sites that promotes cyber bullying and illegal activities.

Business sites that are poorly moderated are pitiful. People start hating them for accidentally posting irrelevant company announcements. Online moderation works by checking articles and comments before these are posted. Online moderators take action when some posts are received by the public negatively and found forum members misbehaving.

On the other hand, online moderation is not just about other people who misbehave. It is also about us, as internet users. Online moderation reminds us to be careful and be sensitive when using the internet. It reminds us to respect other people. The internet may have been causing us anxieties but online moderation is here to make the cyber world a “healthier” space to utilize.
